Minimum Requirements

All applicants must be at least one year beyond high school graduation and turn 19 prior to or during the summer of employment.  Age and experience requirements are different for supervisory or trip leader positions.  See job descriptions for explanations. C5 is a drug-free, alcohol-free, and non-smoking work environment.  A criminal background investigation, reference checks, and a pre-employment drug screening are required for all prospective employees. A motor vehicle record check is required for those required to drive as part of their job responsibilities.

Positions

C5 Los Angeles hires Counselors to live and work with groups of youth, Specialists to teach skills and lead activities, and Team Leaders to supervise staff who are charged with monitoring youth or delivering program.  

I. Counselor

The Counselor is the strongest and most constant of role models, and the strong bond formed between youth and their Counselor is an essential part of our youth’s development.

II. Specialist Positions

  • Adventure/Outdoor Activity management
  • Arts and expression
  • Backcountry instructors
  • Horse instructors
  • Mountain biking
  • Rock climbing
  • Trek instructors and leaders
  • Trip leaders
  • Swimming and waterfront activities

III. Team Leader

The Team Leader plays the critical role of providing leadership, training and support to Counselors and Specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Train, coach and supervise 6 to 7 Counselors or Specialists
  • Monitor camper progress and coach Group Leaders on managing camper behavior
  • Evaluate Counselor or Specialist performance and provide feedback  
  • Design and lead camp learning experiences and programs

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 21 years old, with some college experience
  • Experience in the field of youth development
  • Documented experience in a supervisory role
  • Capable of visually and audibly supervising 6 – 8 Specialists or Counselors responsible for up to 40 campers
  • Capable of hiking/walking to all activity areas of camp
  • Capable of lifting at least 35 pounds and carrying it a distance of 50 feet or more

IV. Support Staff

C5 Los Angeles hires support specialists in the fields of health care, food service and facilities maintenance.

V. C5 Bridges Backcountry Guide

The C5 Bridges Backcountry Guides lead 13-day travel experiences with small groups of teens. Trips include backpacking in the remote Big Horn Mountain Range of Wyoming. The position is physically demanding. Success requires insightful facilitation and dynamic leadership to promote positive relationships, sharpening of leadership skills, and connecting trip-related challenges to skills needed for success in college, work, and life.

Responsibilities

  • Travel with groups along a 6-day, 35-mile backpacking route
  • Facilitate activity sessions (rock climbing, rappelling, fishing, etc.)
  • Manage risks; comply with safety protocols; involve youth in building a safety-conscious culture
  • Facilitate structured curriculum
  • Assist with logistical support (transportation, packing food, issuing gear)

Minimum Requirements

  • 23 years old; some college experience
  • Experience in working with youth
  • Experience leading trips similar in scope
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and Lifeguard training
  • Ability to carry a 55-pound backpack over rugged terrain up to 12 hours a day for 6 days
  • Commitment to Leave No Trace ethics and practice
  • Clean driving record
  • Drug-free

VI. C5LA College Tour & ACT NOW Summit Counselor
The College Tour and ACT NOW Summit counselor will help lead two separate week long activities.

  1. The C5LA Road To College - Each year C5LA students, (rising 11th graders), choose, design and implement a 7 day college campus tour.  Counselors will help support C5 youth through the experience, facilitating discussions and reflecting upon personal experience to guide C5LA through the initial stages of the college decision process.  In addition counselors will participate in college prep workshops led by staff, meet college representatives, interact with college students, and of course, have fun!
  2. The ACT NOW SUMMIT will focus on our rising seniors.  The program is designed to help youth become advocates for other youth.  C5LA students have spent five years developing leadership skills, applying those skills in real world settings and preparing for higher education and the adventures that lay ahead.  During the ACT NOW Summit, C5 youth will become advocates for other LAUSD youth, designing, developing and planning a College Access event for other students.  The planning sessions will take place in either a camp or college camps setting.  The role of the counselor will be to supervise, facilitate the planning sessions, and help coordinate and lead activities.      

Responsibilities and Minimum Requirements

  • Actively engage in all presentations and activities
  • Help lead activities/student workshops focused on college preparation
  • Ensure the physical and emotional needs of all students on tour
  • Serve as a resource, a mentor, a leader, and a role model
  • 20 years old; at least two years of college experience
  • Experience working with First Generation College students is a plus
