C5 Los Angeles was recently invited by LAUSD to provide ‘College Connections’ curriculum for the Beyond the Bell “Leadership Campaign”. C5LA will design, plan and facilitate customized college tour experiences for the 25 high schools currently participating in the “Leadership Campaign”.
Through this exciting partnership, C5LA has the opportunity to extend our reach into the community and provide support, opportunities and college access information to hundreds of additional youth across the school district.
Greg Kovacs, Executive Director of C5LA, was recently asked to serve on the American Camping Association Southern California Board of Directors.
C5 teens are talented, motivated and dedicated. They make a difference in their communities by holding themselves to a higher standard. They serve as an inspiration to others, and work hard to accomplish their goals. Here are just a few examples of the impact C5 has on teens:
During her first year as a participant in the C5 program, Jessica completed over 466 hours of volunteer service hours in her community while maintaining a 4.0 G.P.A. Jessica is working hard to maintain her academic excellence, and is proud to set a good example for her sisters.
Oscar credits the leadership skills he learned through the C5 Program when reflecting upon his improved ability to make friends and get involved in his community. . “Since I am not going to my school of residence I had to make friends all over again, but it was easy with those leadership qualities I learned through C5”. – Oscar Oscar joined the marching band at his current high school, and is confident that he will achieve a 4.0 this semester. He participates in the C5 Student run newsletter and frequently contacts the office to share updates about his achievements.
Julian graduated the C5 program in 2009. He returned to camp this past summer to volunteer as a ‘Counselor in Training’. Julian received a full ride scholarship to Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and is currently studying Electrical Engineering. Julian credits his involvement with the C5 program as the key to his academic success. When he returned to Los Angeles after his first summer at camp, Julian decided to begin tutoring and mentoring boys younger than him. He realized the importance of acting as a positive role model, and hopes to return to work for C5 as a counselor in the future.
Edgar graduated from the C5 program in 2008. He was active in student government, and completed over 300 hours of community service. Edgar was Editor-in-Chief of the C5 student-run newsletter for two years. He received several academic scholarships and is currently attending UC Berkeley. Edgar remains actively involved in his college community. He is a tour guide for prospective students and volunteers to share the college experience with current C5 students interested in UC Berkeley.
