The “C5 Bridges Program” also known as the The Rexam Leadership Challenge (RLC) is a 12-day backcountry leadership adventure in Montana and Wyoming. It is designed to inspire the C5 youth by providing opportunities to apply their newly developed leadership skills and to “jump start” their journey to the future.
RLC is an important step in preparing for the rest of C5. Year three and the second summer program is the “bridge” between learning leadership (years one and two) and applying those skills to real life situations (years four and five). Wrestling with naturally-occurring challenges along the trail, youth learn about leadership by leading. Every day involves decisions that matter and valuable lessons about strength, character, and commitment.
Backpackers quickly learn that there are no shortcuts to the top of a mountain. The only way to get there is by taking one step at a time all the way to the summit. This lesson applies to their future, helping them understand that “wishing” won’t get you where you want to go. To achieve lofty goals in life, like graduating from college, one has to take all the steps.
RLC provides real challenge. It is physically and emotionally demanding. It also includes invaluable lessons about success in daunting environments. What youth take away from the RLC experience will better prepare them for success in college, career, and life.
